Super Saturday Series features Red, White & Blue workshop for children ages 4-8

Center, TX – The Super Saturday Series children’s art program will feature a Red, White and Blue workshop with instructor, Carrie Weeks, on Saturday, June 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lakes Area Arts League Art Center located at 305 Nacogdoches Street.

Space is limited to 15 participants and workshop fees are $20 per student, which includes all art supplies. Advance reservations are required and the registration deadline is Friday, June 19, 2009. The June workshop will offer a variety of crafts all incorporating the colors red, white and blue honoring and celebrating our nation’s Independence Day.

Remaining Super Saturday Series workshops for 2009 include Sunshine & Seashells July 11; Having a Blast with Buttons August 8; Autumn is Awesome September 5; Happy Haunting October 10; Being Thankful for Arts & Crafts November 14; and Celebrating Christmas on December 19. Each workshop requires advance registration and an enrollment fee.

Donations presented to Homegrown & Homemade and Joe Louis Jones

On Friday, May 15, two special presentations were held at the historic Shelby County Courthouse, located on the downtown square in Center, Texas. LAAL Directors and Officers presented a donation to Thomas Morrison and Dr. Danny Paul Windham with Homegrown & Homemade to assist with the group's CD production expenses. The LAAL also presented Mr. Joe Louis Jones with a wireless microphone to assist with his tours at the historic courthouse. The donations were made possible with proceeds from the April Homegrown and Homemade concert. Attending the presentation included Karen Thompson, President; Ed Konderla, Vice-President; Andi Foster, Secretary; David Swanzy; Terri Lacher; Thomas Morrison, Danny Paul Windham; and Joe Louis Jones.

Lakes Area Arts League announces winners The Art of Flight: Nature and Man-Made Flying Machines Photography Competition

Center, Texas - The Lakes Area Arts League announces the winners in The Art of Flight: Nature and Man-Made Flying Machines photography competition. The competition invited student, amateur and professional photographers to submit images associated with the overall “flight” theme in Nature and Man-Made Flying Machines categories. The photographs were displayed at the Center Municipal Airport during the 6th Annual Center Fly-In event on Saturday, May 23, 2009 sponsored by the City of Center and Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

The Lakes Area Arts League congratulates all Art of Flight 2009 winners and extends gratitude to the City of Center and to the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce for allowing the airport lobby to be used as gallery space for the photography exhibition.

Krista Elliott received the Overall Competition Best of Show Award for her entry “Heroes in the Sky,” which also earned her the Overall Best of Show and People’s Choice Awards in the Man-Made Flying Machines category. Elliott’s “Keeper of Secrets” entry received both the Director’s Choice and People’s Choice Awards in the Nature category.

Kate Davis captured the Overall Best of Show in the Nature category for “Beach Flight.”

Jean Wood received the Pilot’s Choice Award in the Man-Made Flying Machines category for “First Flight.”
