Center, Texas – March 5, 2010 - The Homegrown and Homemade performance will be held Sat., April 3, 2010 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Rio Theater on the downtown square in Center, Texas. Advance tickets are $10.00 per person and $15.00 at the door at show time. Tickets are available at Austin Street Marketplace, Attoyac River Gallery, Gatherings and Morrison Insurance; all businesses located on the downtown Center square. Proceeds will benefit the Lakes Area Arts League.
Homegrown and Homemade is a music series that will highlight local Shelby County guitar-pickers and songwriters. Spanning many different styles, ages and musical influences, five musicians have been picked to showcase in 2010. These Shelby county songwriters include Colby Miller, Thomas Morrison, Tim Hopkins, Tom Peterson and Danny Paul Windham. In an intimate setting, each songwriter will share the stage and highlight a handful of songs that were hand-written in and about Shelby County.
The past year has been a busy one for Colby Miller. Since the first installment of Homegrown and Homemade in 2009, Miller has shared the stage with artists such as Walt Wilkins, Jason Allen, Radney Foster, Chris Knight, Shake Russell and The Band of Heathens. Gearing up for his debut studio project, Miller is quickly gaining music industry attention and fans around the country. His pop-folk style is particularly remarkable, and his flowing, refreshing lyrics continue to turn heads. "When I heard it, I was blown away! Miller's sound is like cool, cool water in the summer heat," said Radney Foster, highly acclaimed singer-songwriter and producer. Having grown up in Center and graduated from Center High School, Colby Miller always enjoys the opportunity to come home and play for family and friends.
Playing guitar and writing songs since high school, Thomas Morrison has been learning and growing in his musical pursuits for almost 10 years. After being introduced to the music of the 60’s and 70’s from his parents at an early age, Morrison has loved music all of his life. The support group that will be sharing the stage with Morrison on April 3, 2010 has encouraged him to write, play and entertain Center, Texas audiences for the last three years.
Tim Hopkins is relatively new to the songwriting club, but has cranked out some tremendous tunes. Hopkins’ songs are crowd-pleasing, upbeat and very genuine. Painting a beautiful image of small-town life, Hopkins touches on topics ranging from high-school aged activities to finding faith in small country churches. After one listens to any song from Hopkins, you cannot deny that his major influences are Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. Heavily influenced by gospel music, Hopkins creates a unique sound that fits into any southern atmosphere. Also a Center High School graduate, Hopkins has spent several years in Dallas, but has returned to Shelby County to raise his two little girls with his Shelby County wife. Hopkins works for Shelby Savings Bank in Hemphill and leads the music for McClelland Baptist Church in Shelbyville.
A former native of Wharton County, Tom Peterson moved to Shelby County over 30 years ago and has been practicing pharmacy in the area ever since. Peterson began learning the guitar at age 35 and began writing songs shortly thereafter. Playing with Danny Paul Windham and the Pine Hill Revue for almost 20 years, Peterson has enjoyed seeing the young songwriters in Shelby County blossom. As a very detailed writer and a talented musician, Peterson believes the best songs come from the heart with personal meaning to the writer.
Danny Paul Windham needs no introduction in East Texas, as his “larger than life” presence will hold your attention in any size room. Playing with bands from the time he was in college, Windham has traveled around the state and country sharing his own homegrown music that he calls “country as a dirt clod.” A true gem of Shelby County, Windham and his band, The Pine Hill Revue, will break into song at the drop of a hat. As a local dentist, Windham and his wife, Sally, are well known. They have also entertained the county for years as musical coordinators for the East Texas Poultry Festival. Original influences like David Allan Coe and Willie Nelson, Windham’s repertoire has grown over the years to include works of Rodney Crowell, Chris Knight, Todd Snider, Monty Montgomery and Robert Earl Keen. His personal songs are the true crowd pleasers as they touch on topics we all can appreciate and relate to as Shelby County citizens.

She holds a BA in English from the University of Arkansas. Her publications include: Whitest Wash: A Collection of Short Fiction by Ozark Women; “Huston Scott’s Letters from California” Flashback: Washington County (AR) Historical Society Journal; “The Striped Overalls” Fayetteville Free Weekly (third place winner for Short Fiction); and “Stories of our Lives” (bi-weekly column) Rogers (AR) Hometown News. She also contributes articles to Shiloh Scrapbook: Shiloh Museum of Ozark History Newsletter.

AWG January 2010 Meeting - Roundtable Discussion
Happy New Year from the Attoyac Writers' Guild!
The AWG will meet on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Attoyac River Gallery on the downtown square. The meeting will be a general roundtable discussion and members are encouraged to share their writing endeavors and poetry. The January meeting is also the deadline for the in-house writing activity; please bring your work and share with the group.
Touch of Heaven held the book signing event on Saturday, December 5, 2009 for Terri Lacher and her recent publication "His Name is Samson" in Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog. LAAL announces David Masterson Artist Reception Exhibit Opening
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Center, Texas – Oct. 29 - The Lakes Area Arts League presents the David Masterson Art Exhibit with an opening reception on Sat., Dec. 5 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the LAAL Art Center, 305 Nacogdoches Street, located one block from the historic downtown Center Square. The exhibition is open to the public and will remain on display through Sat., Dec. 19.
“Imagination took the reins, and Reason, slow-paced, though sure-footed, was unequal to a race with so eccentric” is attributed to English novelist and playwright, Fanny Burney, and identifies local artist David Masterson. Masterson travels around the world gaining material for his paintings, drawings and sculptures, which are all reflective of his adventures from fishing and filming over the last 20 years. He has logged over 137 days in the remote regions of the Amazonia Rain Forest, wherein the Amazon and other rivers of Northern Brazil have been a great influence in his works over the last ten years.
Galleries in Houston and Dallas have been hosts for Masterson’s art shows and his artwork has been featured in places such as Starbucks, Café 450, the Kolish Gallery and the Y gallery in Dallas. In January 2006, Masterson was the feature artist at Silos in San Antonio.
Masterson has worked with all art media and has completed advanced art and design studies at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. In addition to creating artwork, Masterson’s other passions are filming and photography. His filming credits include producer and host of Outdoor Chronicles, which have been broadcasted on NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX networks and nationally on the Outdoor Channel. Currently, Masterson is involved in freelance production for different companies, including ESPN.
Masterson’s unmistakable theme for his December exhibition will be based on Van Gogh’s statement “Am not an adventurer by Choice, but by Fate.” All artwork will be priced for sale during the exhibition with Masterson donating 50% of the proceeds to the Lakes Area Arts League. Artwork DVDs will also be available and free upon request for anyone interested in viewing more of Masterson’s creations.
Masterson resides in Center, Texas with his wife, Mary and they have two children, Michael and Michelle, and three labs.

Lakes Area Arts League presents the Ellen Cogswell Art Exhibition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CENTER, Texas – Oct. 21, 2009 – The Lakes Area Arts League announces the Ellen Cogswell Art Exhibition at the LAAL Art Center, located at 305 Nacogdoches Street, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 with an opening reception from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the reception and meet the artist, Ellen Cogswell. The exhibit will remain on display through Saturday, Nov. 21, 2008.
Ellen Cogswell, professional artist, Lakes Area Arts League founding member, Nacogdoches Art League charter member and member with the Attoyac Writers’ Guild, will showcase original oil paintings and watercolors at the November exhibit as well as other pieces depicting her unique techniques and creative artwork expressions in landscapes, floral and abstracts themes. Selected artwork items will be available for purchase.
“I am excited about having the opportunity of sharing my past year’s work with art league and the public. I have enjoyed working in art for the past 40 years, both as a hobby and at a professional level,” says Cogswell. “For the past year, I have been recalling techniques I learned from many qualified artists in workshops, classes and things I tried on my own. Without the chance to show this to others is like talking to yourself.”
Cogswell adds, “I wish to dedicate this show in memory of one who urged me on when I had very little time to pursue it, Fleta Thomason. If I can encourage one person to carry on the struggle, they will be well rewarded in many ways.”
Ellen’s repertoire includes attending numerous workshops and receiving instruction through the years from various artists, such as Reese Kennedy, Doug Walton, Edgar Whitney, illustrator for MGM, Mark Weber with the Kansas City Museum and Louis G. Sicard, famed Shreveport and nationally recognized artist and fellow of the Royal Society of Art, Great Britain, and Elected Artist of the Year by the Shreveport Journal Cultural Awards (www.askart.com).
Over the years, Ellen’s art work has earned various awards from entries in juried art exhibitions, such as the Nacogdoches Art League, Lakes Area Arts League Membership Art Exhibitions and the annual Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Poultry Festival Art Show competitions. Ellen has given numerous art demonstrations and has volunteered in the past with the Center Independent School District’s ACE program where she instructed students in various art techniques. CENTER, Texas – Oct. 21, 2009 – The Lakes Area Arts League announces the Ellen Cogswell Art Exhibition at the LAAL Art Center, located at 305 Nacogdoches Street, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 with an opening reception from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the reception and meet the artist, Ellen Cogswell. The exhibit will remain on display through Saturday, Nov. 21, 2008.
Ellen Cogswell, professional artist, Lakes Area Arts League founding member, Nacogdoches Art League charter member and member with the Attoyac Writers’ Guild, will showcase original oil paintings and watercolors at the November exhibit as well as other pieces depicting her unique techniques and creative artwork expressions in landscapes, floral and abstracts themes. Selected artwork items will be available for purchase.
“I am excited about having the opportunity of sharing my past year’s work with art league and the public. I have enjoyed working in art for the past 40 years, both as a hobby and at a professional level,” says Cogswell. “For the past year, I have been recalling techniques I learned from many qualified artists in workshops, classes and things I tried on my own. Without the chance to show this to others is like talking to yourself.”
Cogswell adds, “I wish to dedicate this show in memory of one who urged me on when I had very little time to pursue it, Fleta Thomason. If I can encourage one person to carry on the struggle, they will be well rewarded in many ways.”
Ellen’s repertoire includes attending numerous workshops and receiving instruction through the years from various artists, such as Reese Kennedy, Doug Walton, Edgar Whitney, illustrator for MGM, Mark Weber with the Kansas City Museum and Louis G. Sicard, famed Shreveport and nationally recognized artist and fellow of the Royal Society of Art, Great Britain, and Elected Artist of the Year by the Shreveport Journal Cultural Awards (www.askart.com).
Over the years, Ellen’s art work has earned various awards from entries in juried art exhibitions, such as the Nacogdoches Art League, Lakes Area Arts League Membership Art Exhibitions and the annual Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Poultry Festival Art Show competitions. Ellen has given numerous art demonstrations and has volunteered in the past with the Center Independent School District’s ACE program where she instructed students in various art techniques. Legacy Grillworks receives Grand Champion at LAAL’s first Tailgate Cook-off Classic

Center, Texas – Oct. 19, 2009 – The parking lot at 305 Nacogdoches Street was transformed into a tailgate arena filled with all types of cooking grills and sports décor at the Lakes Area Arts League’s first Tailgate Cook-off Classic cooking competition and food tasting event held Sat., Oct. 17, 2009.
Food judges sampled the tailgate foods prepared by the cooking teams and awarded the Grand Champion $1000 prize to Legacy Grillworks Gabriel Parks, chief cook and team members, Kevin Rushing and James Tyre. Legacy Grillworks also received the second place $350 award in the Tailgate Food Division and second place $300 award in the Tailgate Space Division.

Attoyac Writers’ Guild presents An Evening with Champion Mojo Storyteller Joe R. Lansdale
Center, TX – Highly-regarded and award winning champion Mojo storyteller Joe R. Lansdale will be the guest speaker at the Attoyac Writers’ Guild on Tues., Oct. 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Attoyac River Gallery, located on Shelbyville Street, downtown Center square. Lansdale has written hundreds of horror, western, mystery and suspense stories that have appeared in a variety of mediums including books, film, television and comics.
Where does Mojo storytelling come from? How does a fella learn to spin over-the-top yarns of any sort: horror, suspense, humor, science fiction, Western, what have you? First you got to see the world, like champion Mojo storyteller Joe R. Lansdale, who has lived everywhere from Gladewater, Texas to Mount Enterprise, Texas to Nacogdoches, Texas!
"Texas is so wrapped up in myth and legend, it’s hard to know what the state and its people are really about," says Lansdale. "Real Texans, raised on these myths and legends, sometimes become legends themselves. The bottom line is, Texas and its people are pretty much what most people mean when they use the broader term ‘America.’ No state better represents the independent spirit, the can-do attitude of America, better than Texas."
The second ingredient to good Mojo storytelling is learning how to take a punch. Or a kick. Or a poke in the eye. And then learning how to avoid them. Lansdale is a student of the martial arts for more than thirty years. He’s a two-time inductee into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, one such honor bestowed upon him for his founding of Shen Chuan, Martial Science. He holds belts in Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, Combat Hapkido, American Combat Kempo, and Aikido, amongst others; in fact, his standard day is six hours at the typewriter, three hours at Lansdale’s Self Defense Systems, the martial-arts studio which he owns and at which he teaches.
With more than twenty books to his credit, Lansdale is the champion Mojo storyteller. He’s been called "an immense talent" by Booklist; "a born storyteller" by Robert Bloch; and The New York Times Book Review declares he has "a folklorist’s eye for telling detail and a front-porch raconteur’s sense of pace." He’s won umpty-ump awards, including five Bram Stoker horror awards, a British Fantasy Award, the American Mystery Award, the Horror Critics Award, the "Shot in the Dark" International Crime Writer’s award, the Booklist Editor’s Award, the Critic’s Choice Award, and a New York Times Notable Book award. He’s got the most decorated mantle in all of Nacogdoches!

Wildlife Art Exhibition Gallery Opening at LAAL October ArtShare
Center, TX – Sept. 29, 2009 – The gallery opening for the collective Wildlife Art Exhibition will be held at the Lakes Area Arts League monthly ArtShare meeting on Tues., Oct., 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the LAAL Art Center located at 305 Nacogdoches Street.
Featured Texas wildlife artists for the collective art exhibition include Tommy Humphrey, Malcolm Calvin Carter, Jordan Jones, all Jasper residents, and Albert C. Faggard, Jr. from Beaumont. Gallery dates include Sat., Oct.17 – Sun. Oct. 18; Sat. Oct. 24 – Sun., Oct. 25 and Sat., Oct. 30 with Saturday hours 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.
Guest artist and exhibitor Tommy Humphrey will present a scratchboard technique demonstration at the ArtShare meeting with a reception immediately following the demonstration. The public is invited to attend the ArtShare meeting and the Wildlife Art Exhibition.
Being one of those who discovered early in life that art was the only thing he could ever do well, Tommy Humphrey’s career choice was predetermined. His career as an art educator left him time to experiment and discover the scratchboard medium. It fit the concept of visual blends that had captured his attention while doing some graphic art assignments. The work of the post-impressionist George Seurat also caught his attention. Seurat developed pointillism, working with dots rather than strokes. The technique employs a visual blend and creates a softening effect to the work. Humphrey would create a black and white drawing on the scratchboard, grey was a result of the visual blend of black and white. These drawings were of animals synonymous with the East Texas region. Then, using a pen point and transparent watercolors he would color most of the white areas with one to five hues. White areas were left uncolored. The combination gave his work a very identifiable look. The works that were achieved over the next 10-15 years allowed him to attend some of the most prestigious wildlife shows in the country.
By the late 1990s, Ampersand developed Clayboard, scratchboard on masonite not mat board. Humphrey visited their factory in Austin, Texas and left with some samples. He discovered that acrylic glazes worked well on this new surface. He began combining his scratchboard technique with acrylic glazing. Presently his work might include one or both depending on the initial mental concept.
Humphrey is a native East Texan. Born in Jasper and raised in Orange, he earned a BS in graphic arts and a Masters in Education. He taught art for 33 years in the West Orange-Cove school district and retired in 2001. He and his artist wife, Jean, live north of Jasper on the banks of the Angelina River.
Malcolm Calvin Carter, a secondary art school teacher at West Sabine Independent School District in Pineland, Texas has competed in both area and regional Texas art shows, including at the Southeast Texas Art Museum, Beaumont and one man and group art exhibitions at the East Texas Art League, Jasper. He will participate in a collection of artists show at the Texas Art Museum Society in Port Arthur to be held in November and December 2009. Currently, a Jasper resident, Carter received his BFA from Lamar University in 2000 and is a 1994 Hempstead High School graduate.
Jordan Jones, a 2010 high school senior at West Sabine Independent School District in Pineland, Texas, has competed in Texas events at both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since 2005 and the Congressional Art Center in Tyler. Jones has received the Best of Show at the Jasper West Sabine Student Art Show held in Jasper, Texas in January 2009.
Born in Beaumont Texas and raised on the Gulf Coast, Albert C. Faggard, Jr. was exposed from an early age to the beauties of southeast Texas. His love of nature and its inhabitants were the inspiration of his early work in the 1970s. Faggard attended Lamar University and then obtained his BFA from the University of Houston’s Fine Art Department. In 1999, after retiring from a successful career in the wine industry, Faggard returned to pursue his lifelong passion of painting and earned his Master of Arts degree from Lamar University in 2003.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Faggard has raised cattle, horses and both native and exotic wildlife. His love and understanding of the subjects that he portrays is evident in each piece. According to Faggard, truth in anatomy, environment, and habitat are abundant throughout the artistic representation in his work. Although realism is represented in each piece, the artist chooses to use elements of color, form, composition, and brushwork to emphasize the importance of the subject matter in each piece.
Faggard’s recent exhibitions include works at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Dishman Museum at Lamar University, the Texas Wild Bunch, Coastal Conservation Association, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International, Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation, Texas Artist Museum and the Federal Wildlife Refuge in Anahuac, Texas.

Featured Texas wildlife artists for the collective art exhibition include Tommy Humphrey, Malcolm Calvin Carter, Jordan Jones, all Jasper residents, and Albert C. Faggard, Jr. from Beaumont. Guest artist and exhibitor Tommy Humphrey will present a scratchboard technique demonstration at the ArtShare meeting with a reception immediately following the demonstration. The public is invited to attend the ArtShare meeting and the Wildlife Art Exhibition.
Being one of those who discovered early in life that art was the only thing he could ever do well, Tommy Humphrey’s career choice was predetermined. His career as an art educator left him time to experiment and discover the scratchboard medium. It fit the concept of visual blends that had captured his attention while doing some graphic art assignments. The work of the post-impressionist George Seurat also caught his attention. Seurat developed pointillism, working with dots rather than strokes. The technique employs a visual blend and creates a softening effect to the work. Humphrey would create a black and white drawing on the scratchboard, grey was a result of the visual blend of black and white. These drawings were of animals synonymous with the East Texas region. Then, using a pen point and transparent watercolors he would color most of the white areas with one to five hues. White areas were left uncolored. The combination gave his work a very identifiable look. The works that were achieved over the next 10-15 years allowed him to attend some of the most prestigious wildlife shows in the country.
By the late 1990s, Ampersand developed Clayboard, scratchboard on masonite not mat board. Humphrey visited their factory in Austin, Texas and left with some samples. He discovered that acrylic glazes worked well on this new surface. He began combining his scratchboard technique with acrylic glazing. Presently his work might include one or both depending on the initial mental concept.
Humphrey is a native East Texan. Born in Jasper and raised in Orange, he earned a BS in graphic arts and a Masters in Education. He taught art for 33 years in the West Orange-Cove school district and retired in 2001. He and his artist wife, Jean, live north of Jasper on the banks of the Angelina River.
Malcolm Calvin Carter, a secondary art school teacher at West Sabine Independent School District in Pineland, Texas has competed in both area and regional Texas art shows, including at the Southeast Texas Art Museum, Beaumont and one man and group art exhibitions at the East Texas Art League, Jasper. He will participate in a collection of artists show at the Texas Art Museum Society in Port Arthur to be held in November and December 2009. Currently, a Jasper resident, Carter received his BFA from Lamar University in 2000 and is a 1994 Hempstead High School graduate.

The Attoyac Writers’ Guild begins second season
Center, Texas – Sept. 10, 2009 – The Attoyac Writers’ Guild, an art of writing program developed through the Lakes Area Arts League, begins their second season on Tues., Sept. 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Attoyac River Gallery, located on the downtown Center square.

Other programs presented by guild members included a Writing Workshop conducted by Nancy Dickerson and Joan Huff presented an overview on How a Library benefits Your Community.

Lakes Area Arts League ArtShare opens third season with artist Michelle Rozic
Center, TX – Aug. 28, 2009 – Michelle Rozic, assistant art professor with Stephen F. Austin State University, will be guest artist at the ArtShare’s third season opening on Tue., Sept. 8, 2009 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakes Area Arts League Art Center, located at 305 Nacogdoches Street. Rozic will be presenting a demonstration about the development, inspiration and process of creation of her artwork, including displaying examples of works, focusing mainly on intaglio prints. In addition, intaglio tools and processes will be discussed with plates and tools, including examples of non-traditional printmaking, Xerox transfer and the use of acrylic paint as a sculpting material.
According to Rozic, still lifes allow us to see our world in the light of metaphor. Everyday objects become symbol and signifier. As the connotations developed in the context of the still life expand upon those meanings - formal, functional or historical - inherent to the objects themselves, ideas are evoked that extend beyond the nameable subject.
Rozic further states images portray situations that trigger contemplation on some of the questions of humanity: the nature of being, inner worth versus outer surface, the real versus the artificial. Issues of contemporary American society are addressed by using modern objects arranged with the language of conventional still life in mind. Imagery of nature, with rock formations, flowers and foliage, is used to speak to issues of the individual and society. There are many parallels between the plant world and our own in terms of how we assign worth to groups found within those worlds. She continues to add flowers are more desirable than dead grass just as the affluent are viewed as being more worthy than the poor. Life is used to speak about life.
Rozic received her BFA in fine arts from the Columbus College of Art & Design in Ohio and her MFA in printmaking from Indiana University, Bloomington. She currently teaches drawing and printmaking at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, in Canada, Mexico, Russia, and in Italy.

LAAL announces Art of Cooking with First Tailgate Cook-off Classic
Center, Texas – August 15, 2009 – The Lakes Area Arts League announces an open call for participation in the first Tailgate Cook-off Classic Art of Cooking to be held Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the LAAL Art Center parking lot located at 305 Nacogdoches Street, one block from the historic downtown square.
The cooking competition is open to anyone age 18 and above. A non-refundable entry fee of $25.00 secures the tailgate space. Team space is limited and advance registration is required by Saturday, October 3, 2009. Teams will be allowed to begin space set-up at 9:00 a.m. Food and space judging will begin at 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Teams will have the opportunity to compete in both the Tailgate Food category preparing food items on-the-spot and the Tailgate Space category creating a tailgate atmosphere within designated space by decorating with a theme of the team’s choice.
Advance event tickets are $10.00 per person to attend the 2009 Tailgate Cook-off Classic and will be available for purchase through Friday, October 16, 2009 at Austin Street Marketplace, 114 Austin Street (936.598.6244); Mill Creek Gallery, 130 Nacogdoches Street (936.598.6137) and Attoyac River Gallery, 111 Shelbyville Street (936.590.9968), downtown Center square. The musicians will share the stage and highlight a handful of songs that were hand-written in and about Shelby County. Pamela Parker Peterson Art Exhibition at Art Center
CENTER, Texas - August 6 - Fort Worth's Pamela Parker Peterson will exhibit her paintings at the Lakes Area Arts League Art Center, 305 Nacogdoches Street, beginning Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and meet the artist at the art center on Sat., Sept. 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Lancaster works with the Fort Worth Independent School District (ISD) as an elementary art teacher and began painting abstract pieces in 2005, but she has painted and created art all her life. She currently practices her oil abstract painting skills as a continuing education student at Tarrant County College and in her home studio in Fort Worth.
Lancaster received honors for her paintings and has participated in various art shows. In the spring of 2008, she received first place for her painting, Full View, in Tarrant County College North West (TCCNW) Visual Arts 33rd Annual Student Art Exhibit. In the summer of 2008, Lancaster was awarded fourth place for her painting, Third, int he Texas Art Coalition Juried Members Show. She also sold two works of art to TCCNW for the permanent collection. Lancaster has participated in other shows, such as Arts Google 2007, Forth Worth Community Arts Center (CAC) Biennial, CAC's 2008 Sight and Sound, Fort Worth ISD Art Educators Show, 2008 Imagination Celebration Art Teacher Nurturing Student Art Show and the Hunting Prize Show of 2009.
Lancaster derives many of her abstract paintings from photographs she finds captivating from images found during her travels. She observes beauty in the relationship of the organic forms discovered within various impressions. According to Lancaster, the photographs are the jumping off point for the paintings, but once completed there is little to no resemblance between the painting and the original photograph. Lancaster adds she is not responding to the content of an image, rather to finding the meaning in its form.
Lancaster graduated from the University of Oklahoma with an Education degree. She then pursued an Art Education Post-Baccalaureate degree from the Texas Woman's University. She is the daughter of Patti Parker Peterson of Fort Worth, and granddaughter of Doris and the late F.E. Parker of Center, Texas.

The LeAnne Rheaume Art Exhibition Held
CENTER, Texas – July 27 – The Lakes Area Art League held a one-day art exhibition and reception honoring LeAnne Rheaume, LAAL scholarship recipient, on Sunday, August 16 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public wass invited to attend the event and meet the artist at the LAAL Art Center 305 Nacogdoches Street in Center, Texas.
Rheaume, aspiring artist and recent Center High School graduate, showcased her unique art work and techniques at the exhibition. Beginning her art education in California, Rheaume continued her art instruction at Center High School during her junior and senior years assisting with the design development for the Youth Art Month banner project and collaborating with the mural creation for the high school’s Fine Arts Department.
Selected as the LAAL scholarship recipient for 2009, Rheaume also received the 2008 Roughrider Excellence Art Award, Poultry Festival 2008 art awards, the Outstanding Community Service tassel and was the first place winner in the recent Child Services Child Abuse poster contest. During the past two years, she volunteered at the LAAL Resource Learning Library and created the Make Me a Superhero Mini Art Camp held in June 2009.
Rheaume will attend the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado in the fall where she plans to pursue a degree as an illustrator in animation. Rheaume is the daughter of Tina Rheaume and Glen Smith of Center, TX.

Super Saturday Series children workshop features Sunshine and Seashells

Center, TX – The Super Saturday Series children’s art program will feature a Sunshine and Seashells workshop offering a variety of crafts celebrating summer with instructor, Carrie Weeks, on Saturday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lakes Area Arts League Art Center located at 305 Nacogdoches Street.
Space is limited to 15 participants and workshop fees are $20 per student, which includes all art supplies. Advance reservations are required and the registration deadline is Friday, July 9, 2009.
Remaining Super Saturday Series workshops for 2009 Having a Blast with Buttons August 8; Autumn is Awesome September 5; Happy Haunting October 10; Being Thankful for Arts & Crafts November 14; and Celebrating Christmas on December 19. Center, Texas – Batman and Superman, make room for the new Superheroes in town! Under the artistic guidance of instructors, LeAnne Rheaume and Donna Neuville, the first Make Me a Superhero Mini Art Camp was successfully held June 24-26 at the Lakes Area Arts League Art Center. The art camp offered students an opportunity to develop individual superheroes through writing essays and comic storyboards, creating character personalities, role playing and designing costumes.
Superheroes attending the art camp included Trey ‘Super Lighting’ Harvey, Alayna ‘Love Girl’ Scull, Jonica ‘Ice Girl’ Glaze, Holden ‘The Scarlet Beast’ Massey and Adam ‘The Forgotten One’ Shofner.
Art camp volunteers assisting the superheroes were Tina Smith, Tiffany ‘Spectrum’ Rheaume, Edgardo Cortez, Sam ‘Dr. Bonehead’ Beasley and Derek ‘The Glue Wizard’ Hughes.
LeAnne Rheaume, creator of the Superhero Art Camp, is a 2009 graduate of Center High School and will be attending Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, Denver, Colorado in the fall.
Donna Neuville currently teaches Art I and Art II at Center Middle School. Previously, Neuville taught art at the primary level with CISD for three years and at Mineola Elementary School for ten years. Her educational background includes obtaining her degrees in M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, Art Concentration and B.S. in Education from the University of Texas in Tyler. Neuville currently serves on the LAAL board of directors and Education Committee.
